How To Stop Getting Lost Thanks To A GPS
Personally, I use several ways to find my way in the woods. And by dint of walking in certain forests, I end up not needing GPS anymore! However, if you want to explore new forests then you should follow our advice to avoid getting lost and find your car easily:
- Before getting out of the car, locate your location using your GPS app! Remember to wait a good minute to be sure that the GPS has correctly geolocated you.
- You should obtain coordinates in this form: 42.531652, -102.561198 (decimal notation) or in this other form: 45°42’29.7″N 6°37’46.7″E (Degree minute second)
- Once you have obtained these GPS coordinates, remember to copy it to your mobile for your return. (in a note-taking application, for example)
In addition, remember to recharge your smartphone or your GPS equipment!
How Do You Avoid Getting Lost With Your Common Sense!
Choose The Forests You Know So You Don’t Get Lost
Indeed, a good way to not get lost in the forest is to start exploring forests that are close to you and that you know a little about. In this way, you will get used to exploring the forest while being safe.
Choose Small Forests
Impossible to get lost in a small forest! Why? Because even if you are disoriented, you can always follow the same direction and end up leaving the forest because it is small.
Thus, a good way to familiarize yourself with the forest environment without getting lost is to go into small forests to be sure to get out quickly in any random direction.
Use The Tree Moss To Find Your Way
Finally, a good way to get your bearings is to use tree moss! Indeed, suppose you arrived from the north of the forest. So you know you’re headed south of the forest to explore this one.
This means that as you go deeper into the forest you are opposite to the direction of the moss on the tree which is always facing north!
Thus, to go back to your car, it will be enough to go in the direction of the North by simply following the direction of the tree moss, which as we have explained, is always oriented towards the North.
So it’s a great way to get your bearings and avoid getting lost too often in the woods!
