Is The Shaggy Mane Mushroom Edible?
The Shaggy Mane Mushroom Becomes Poisonous If:
- Don’t eat it if it grows near roads. Because it easily accumulates pollution and therefore becomes poisonous.
- Eat only young specimens. How to pick young ones? It must be picked up when it has no ink deposits on the edges of the cap yet.
- Consume it quickly after picking. (in the hours following its picking)
Shaggy Mane And Alcohol
Yes, it is possible to consume alcohol with it.
There is often confusion with its cousin, the Common Ink Cap (Coprinopsis atramentaria) which cannot actually be consumed with alcohol.
Shaggy Mane Identification
- Its hat is on average 4 inch wide. It is spindle-shaped and appears to turn black few hours after being picked.
- Its gills are free and white and turn pink then black with age.
- Its stem is cylindrical and measures on average about 4 inch. Its foot does not have a volva, but has a movable ring.

Clean And Preserve
- To clean, gently brush the cap with a brush, if necessary. And cut the base of the stem to remove dirt.
- To keep it, put it in a cool place and consume it imperatively during the day.
Cooking And Recipe
It can be eaten raw. However, we do not recommend consuming it this way due to potential parasites in the mushroom.
A quick cooking of 5 min will do the job perfectly so that the flesh of the mushroom does not deteriorate too much during cooking.
